About Wright State University
Wright State University is a comprehensive public university located in Dayton, which is a city in Green County, in the US state of Ohio, with a population estimated at a number of more than 32 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area, and it is best known for the fact that it is home of Wright State University and to the disaster training facility known as Calamityville. According to the United States Census Bureau, Fairborn has a total area of 13.1 square miles, all of which is land.
Wright State was founded in 1964, and it was originally the Dayton branch campus of both Miami University and Ohio State University, being oficially established under its curent name and mission in October, 1967. Since then, the university significantly grew, having today an enrollment of more than 20 000 students, of which 18 000 are undergraduate. It has strong doctoral, research, and undergraduate programs, which were placed in the annual "America's Best Colleges" rankings, by U.S. News and World Report, among the 260 Best National Universities, the university also offering students baccalaureate degrees in various fields of study, through several colleges, which include: the Raj Soin College of Business, the College of Engineering and Computer Science, and the College of Science and Mathematics.
Athletics
Wright State's athletic teams are known as the Wright State Raiders, who compete in NCAA Division I, in various sports, the most successful ones being men's basketball, swimming and baseball. The Raiders have experinced success in many of their sports, among their most notable achievemnts also being the time when the men's basketball team captured the 1983 Division II national championship and made the NCAA Division I Tournament in 1993 and 2007. The men's swimming team has also contributed to the university's athletic fame, winning the horizon league conference over five times in the past ten years.
Traditions
Every year, in early spring, the Wright State Departments of Art, Music and Theatre, Dance & Motion Pictures puts together a unique celebration of the arts, in hope to raise scholarship funds through the creativity of hundreds of artists, musicians, actors and dancers, known as ArtsGala, an exciting event which combines fine dining with non-stop entertainment, offering students and visitors a full evening of art, music, theater, dance and motion pictures.
